Gastric Balloon

A gastric balloon placed in the stomach can aid weight loss

There are many procedures available to aid weight loss in conjunction with diet. A gastric balloon is a large balloon inflated in the stomach by means of endoscopy. The balloon is left in the stomach for 6-12 months and then removed by means of endoscopy. The stomach is not altered surgically.

The balloon works by reducing the stomach’s ability to retain food and patients will feel full quickly. This period whilst the balloon is in gives the opportunity to adjust to smaller meals in the long term.

Average weight loss is between 1 – 3 stones. Whist the balloon is in, support is available from an experienced dietician.
